About
I am an engineer. I manage a team, but most of my days are still spent building.
I learn fast, and I love to teach. My favorite part of learning something hard is finding the way to explain it so it is easy.
Where it started
The family computer had a big CRT monitor. It sat on a large wooden desk with a shelf built above it. It ran Windows XP, and later Vista. That is where I played Club Penguin, then Minecraft and Garry's Mod.
Minecraft is where it really started. I installed mods by hand, and I ran servers for my friends over LogMeIn Hamachi. Then I learned port forwarding, so my friends could join without it. That was the first time I made a computer do something it did not do out of the box, and I never stopped.
What I believe
- Make it simple. Make it intuitive. Make it elegant.
- Less friction, less noise, fewer layers.
- Fast is a feature. Slop, bloat and bugs are not.
Steve Jobs told a story about a carpenter who finishes the back of a cabinet, though no one will ever see it. I try to build like that carpenter.
Away from the screen
I am handy, and I like to build random things: a doomsday computer in a Pelican case, an off-grid radio messenger, a pocket transcriber. I also like to write stories.
I am learning guitar. I can play the opening of Autumn Leaves and the opening of Mariage d'amour, both poorly.
